TECPR1: A Potential Drug Target and Biomarker for the Treatment of Chronic Pain

Abstract:
Chronic pain is a significant public health issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It prevents many people from enjoying life and at the same time increases the social and economic burden. Although many medications are currently available to treat chronic pain, some patients still experience no relief from their pain. TECPR1 (Transient Extensible Community-Supported Research Program 1) is a new type of gene that plays an important role in the human immune system, nervous system and kidneys. This article will introduce the discovery, mechanism of action and potential of TECPR1 as a drug target.

Introduction:

Chronic pain is persistent, unbearable pain that seriously affects the patient's quality of life. According to the World Health Organization, millions of people around the world are affected by chronic pain. Chronic pain not only causes great distress to patients themselves, but also leads to rising medical costs worldwide. Therefore, research on new methods and new drugs to treat chronic pain has become a hot topic in the current medical field.

Discovery of TECPR1:

TECPR1 is a new type of gene discovered by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The TECPR1 gene is located on the human chromosome and is closely related to the immune system, nervous system and kidneys. Variations in the TECPR1 gene are associated with many chronic pain conditions, such as headaches, arthritis, low back pain, etc.

Protein Name: Tectonin Beta-propeller Repeat Containing 1

Functions: Tethering factor involved in autophagy. Involved in autophagosome maturation by promoting the autophagosome fusion with lysosomes: acts by associating with both the ATG5-ATG12 conjugate and phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PtdIns(3)P) present at the surface of autophagosomes. Also involved in selective autophagy against bacterial pathogens, by being required for phagophore/preautophagosomal structure biogenesis and maturation
